Snaefellsnes Peninsula(Iceland): a Day Trip

July 2019  [by Bill]

Today I took a full day tour(about $120), departing from Reykjavik at 9:00 AM, heading north, starting on the western part of the country. The driver and tour guide’s name was Thor (a huge man, with a pot belly.). He attempted to tell some jokes in English, but he kept missing the punchline, which was funnier than the actual joke. Thor asked me what I did for work, and when I mentioned I was in the distribution business of comic books, he perked right up and started to tell me all of his favorites from the 1960’s – Robert Crumb, Gilbert Shelton, Victor Moscoso, Rick Griffen, and a number of others. For the rest of the day he called me Mister Natural. Keep on trucking!

We visited the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, including the Snaefallsjokull Glacier, several local Icelandic fishing villages, and Djupalonssandur Beach. In addition, we drove by the Kirkjufell Mountain, which is now known as the Game Of Thrones Mountain.

I walked up the side of Saxhall crater, which afforded a fantastic 360 degree view of the valley below, plus you got a spectacular view of the glacier across the way.

Directly across from the snow capped volcano is a long walk to a cliff overhang, with the black lava sand on the beach below. I’m running out of superlatives!!! The road cuts directly through a massive lava flow area. If you’ve never seen or walked through a lava flow before, there is nothing like it. Kinda like you think the moon surface might be like.

Finally, we stopped at several picturesque waterfalls and lakes.

Once again the weather today was wonderful – 62 degrees, sunny, and no clouds. Altogether another great day Iceland!
