We Do It Our Way

Because it’s not that expensive. Friends ask us how we can travel so much & this is our answer. We don’t mean backpacking trips on a shoestring budget. We’ve graduated from that a long time ago.

When we see a deal, we pack our bags. We prefer to travel on our own rather than joining an organized tour. When we cruise, we rarely join the “shore excursions” that are organized by the ship. But, when there is a lot to see & only limited time, and, the local economy warrants relatively reasonably priced guide/driver services, we go with them.

We started working on this blog site in January 2018 mainly to show our friends what we’ve done & tell them, “hey, you can do it, too!” We will try to include as much information as possible just in case you want to copy our trips. We are hoping that you will be able to visualize what we saw and did by clicking all the links within each page.  We will be much more organized from here on & have matching visuals with each blog entry. We dug out old photos and write-ups to share, but we could go back only as old as 2005 or thereabouts. We hit a jackpot when we came across old travel journals of our daughter Chrissy who had joined some of our trips to Korea and China. Our memories faded and the details of old trips are not quite fully intact. We also can’t locate all the ‘wonderful pictures’ we think we took. We will keep adding and revising as we find/remember more. This is another journey we are taking, and it will be fun to see where it leads.

“어떻게 그리 맨날 여행을 다니세요?” 라는 물음에 나오는 답니다. 그렇다고 해서 우리는 쥐꼬리 만한 예산으로 아끼고 아끼면서 자고먹고 해야 하는 배낭족은 아니다. 그시절은 이미 오래전에 지나가고 말았다.

우리 부부는 여행사 투어 보다는 개인 여행을 선호한다. 크루즈를 할때도 배에서 하는 단체여행 보다는 둘이서 조용히 빠져나가 쏘다닌다. 단 제한된 시간 안에 볼것이 많다면, 그리고 현지 사정상 가이드/전용기사 서비스가 경제적 이라면 우리는 그서비스를 이용한다.

이 블로그 사이트는 우리의 경험을 친구들과 공유하여 그들도 여행을 즐길수 있도록 하기 위해 2018년 1월 시작했다. 우리의 여행을 따라하기 원하는 사람들을 위해 가능한 많은 정보를 포함하려 노력할 것이다. 각 페이지에 포함된 링크들을 누르면서 블로그를 읽다보면 우리가 무엇을 보았고 무엇을 했는지 그림이 떠오를수 있으리라 생각한다. 이제 부터 앞으로는 글과 그림이 어울리는 잘 정리된 블로그를 유지할수 있을 것이다. 그전의 사진과 기록들을 끄집어 내어 사이트에 올려 놓긴 했지만 2005년 이전의 것들은 어디로 숨었는지 찾을 길이 없었다. 지난 기억은 희미하고 디테일도 헷갈린다. 분명 언젠가 찍었던 멋진 사진들이 있겠건만, 다 어디로 증발했는지 알수없다.  기억이 살아나고 옛사진을 발견할때 마다 이 블로그 사이트는 계속 진화할 것이다.  본 블로그를 시작하는 것 자체가 우리에게는 또하나의 새로운 여정이며 과연 이것이 우리를 어디로 안내해줄런지 흥미롭게 지켜보고 있다.

Planning is part of the fun. So I do the research & come up with itineraries.

Seeing more makes me a little humbler. I also get something I do not get often by sitting in my study or living room: the feeling that we all may be able to get along peacefully on this earth some day.

내게는 여행 일정을 짜는 과정 자체가 여행하는 즐거움의 한부분.

세계를 널리 보면 볼수록 나는 좀 더 겸손해진다. 또한 여행을 하다보면 사무실 이나 집에 가만 앉아서는 자주 느끼지 못하는 것 – 세상 모두가 지구별 위에서 사이 좋게 살아갈수도 있겠다는 가능성 – 을 느낄수 있다.

When I first met YK I did not even have a passport.  She has opened up the world to me.

Yes, she does all the planning and I take advantage.  She spends endless hours planning sights to see, lodging, methods of transportation, even restaurants to visit, and I gladly follow along.  It’s always an interesting adventure, occasionally more interesting than I had bargained for.
