Zambezi River(Zimbabwe): Sunset Cruise

August 2019   [by Bill]

I left Cape Town, South Africa on an early morning 2 hour and 30 minute flight(about $200) to Victoria Falls(population: 33,600), which is in the north western part of Zimbabwe, where I’ll be staying for the next 6-days in a very nice Airbnb apartment.

I had booked a sunset cruise along the Zambezi River (one of the longest rivers in the world, over 1,600 miles in total length). It runs through the borders of Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, Namibia, and farther along into Angola.

While on the Zambezi River I saw baby alligators, as well as some much larger ones, lots of hippos, a few monkeys, vultures, egrets, a water monitor lizard, plus a host of other birds.

Towards the end of the cruise, a beautiful sunset left me inspired to wonder what the next few days adventures, sights, sounds, animals and the locals will treat me to.

A couple of quick notes about Zimbabwe:

Their currency is no longer used or recognized, as the Zimbabwe inflation is over 1 million percent, and is putting the whole country into economic uncertainty. They do take US dollars, Euros, British pounds, and some other currencies as well, plus some places take credit cards.

There are rolling power outages throughout the country on an almost daily basis, with some lasting a few minutes, while at other times up to 12-hours each and every day. These aren’t scheduled, so in my case, the power went out at 6:30 AM this morning, which only lasted about an hour. I sat outside enjoying the backyard of the Airbnb I’m staying at.

Gasoline shortages are common place. On the ride from the airport to the Victoria Falls area, I passed by several gasoline stations, which had lines of cars as far as you could see. The driver told me this happens every day.
